종묘
- After founding of new dynasty in 1392, King Taejo, needed a new seat of power to rule his
kingdom away from the influence of old forces.
- Ordered to build the two key facilities - the royal ancestral shrine-종묘,
- the altars for the gods of land and crops-사직단.
- (to the left and right side of the palace, respectively.)
- Jongmyo, the royal ancestral shrine, was to house the spirit tablets of kings and queens, and the
Sajik would comprise the altars for gods
- The most important buildings are 정전, main hall, and 영녕전, secondary hall.
- Burnt down during the Japanese invasion of 1592; 임진war, the shrine reconstructed in 1608.
- It went through a number of renovation in order to expand its space.
- Only Korea preserved its royal shrine and continues to perform royal ancestral rites, known as Jongmyo Jerye and its music(Jongmyo Jeryeak).
- This is the reason why Jongmyo was designated as the UNESCO World Heritge List in 1995 and Jongmyo Jerye(royal ancestral rites) and Jeryeak(royal ancestral ritual music) were designated by UNESCO as masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2001.
1) 정전 :
- When the king or queen died, after 3 years mourning, brought the spirit tablet and enshrined.
- 정전 contains 19 chambers housing 49 spirit tablets (19칸에 신주 49위) of kings and queens.
- Housed the spirit tablets of 태조, four generations of king태조 and followed by the kings and queens with distinguished achievements.
- The scenery of the rough, expansive stone yard and magnificent roof has the ultimate beauty in classical architecture
- National treasure No.227, built in 1395.
2) 영녕전
- Was built in 1421, under king세종
- 정전 was not allowed to have more spirit chambers than Ming china’s royal shrine, as more spirit chambers were needed, decided another shrine should be built. Hence 영녕전 was constructed beside 정전
- It literally means ‘ long live both ancestors and descendants of the royal family in peace’, smaller and more intimate than 정전
- It contains 16 chambers housing 34 tablets. Excluding kings that were thrown out: 연산군, 광해군
3) Preparations places for the rites
- 향대청: storage areas and waiting rooms for ritual officiant(사제)
- 재 궁: rooms for purifying body and mind for king and his son before attending sacrificial rites.
- 악공청: where court musicians stood by before performing for rituals.
- 전사청: ritual foods prepared here.
