덕수궁은 본래 성종의 형 월산대군의 사저였다가, 임진왜란이 일어난 이후 경복궁,창덕궁이 불타 복구할 때까지 임시적으로 궁궐로 사용하였다가, 구한말 민비가 암살당하고 나서 다시 대한제국의 궁궐로 사용이 됩니다. 그래서 석조전같은 서양식 건물도 있고, 러시아 건축가가 설계한 동서양의 양식이 합쳐진 건물도 있습니다.
- Deoksugung Palace served as the King's residence twice during Joseon Dynasty.
- The site was originally the home of Prince Wolsan[성종의 형]
- King Seonjo lived there temporily after returning to Hanyang following the withdrawal of Japanese
forces in 1593.
- King Gwanghae named it Gyeongungung Palace (before it was called 정릉동행궁, temporary palace
in 정릉동)
- King Gojong was forced to hand his throne over to his son and live there until his death in 1919.
- His son[Sunjong] bestowed the title of Deoksu(Virtue and long life) on his father wishing him a
long life and since then, the palace compound has been called "Deoksugung".
- At that time, the palace compound was about 3 times larger than its current size.
1) 중화전
- Junghwajeon is the Deoksugung's main throne hall.
- King Gojong wanted to make Deoksugung Palace enhance the prestige of "Daehan Empire."
- Therefore, the ceiling of its building and the emperor's exclusive pathway are adorned with
dragon figures and the window frames are golden.(Dragon and gold symbolizes an emperor.)
2) 석조전
Seokjojeon is western-style architecture completed in 1910.
It consists of three floors.
- Ground floor : The kitchen and storage used by servants
- 1st floor : Official workplace
- 2nd floor : Private living quarters of the royal family
Now, Daehan Empire History Museum[대한제국역사박물관] and National museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Deoksugung branch[국립현대미술관 덕수궁관] are located in Seokjojeon.
3) 정관현
- A mixture of western and traditional construction styles designed by a Russian architect.
- King Gojong took a rest here with a cup of coffee amid the political turmoil of his life.
